Non-Defining Clauses
What They Are: Non-defining clauses provide additional information about a noun or pronoun in a sentence but do not limit or define it.
Example: "My brother, who lives in New York, is visiting us."
Here, "who lives in New York" is a non-defining clause that adds information about "my brother."
Relative Non-Defining Clauses

  • Function: They add extra context without changing the main meaning of the sentence.
Using Relative Pronouns
    Who: Refers to people.
  • Example: "The teacher, who has taught for 20 years, is retiring."
    Whom: Formal, for the object of a verb or preposition, referring to people.
  • Example: "The author, whom I admire, will be giving a lecture."
    Whose: Indicates possession.
  • Example: "The car, whose owner is my neighbor, is parked outside."
    Which: Refers to animals or things.
  • Example: "The novel, which was published last year, became a bestseller."
